What is Zepbound® all about?

Zepbound® is a prescription medication that contains tirzepatide, the same active ingredient used in Mounjaro®. It’s a dual-action GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, which means it works by mimicking two natural hormones that help regulate appetite, blood sugar, and digestion.

Zepbound® is FDA-approved for adults who have obesity or are overweight and also have a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes. It is designed to be used along with healthy eating and increased physical activity to support long-term weight management.

What sets Zepbound apart from Ozempic® and Wegovy®?

Wegovy® and Zepbound® are both FDA-approved for weight loss. Ozempic® is approved for type 2 diabetes but is sometimes used off-label for weight management.

The key difference is in the active ingredient: Zepbound® uses tirzepatide, which targets two hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). Ozempic® and Wegovy® use semaglutide, which targets only GLP-1.

That dual-action makes Zepbound more effective at curbing appetite, reducing side effects like nausea, and helping you feel full longer.

What’s the difference between Zepbound® pens and vials?

Zepbound® pens and vials contain the same medication and offer the same weight loss results when taken at equivalent doses. On average, users lose up to 20% of their body weight in one year when paired with lifestyle changes.*

The difference lies in how they’re delivered, dosed, and accessed: Pens are prefilled and ready to use. They’re available in six dose levels: 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg. These can be filled at your regular pharmacy and may be covered by insurance or paid out of pocket. Vials require measuring and injecting with a syringe. They’re available in fewer doses—2.5 mg to 10 mg—and are only offered as a cash-pay option. Vials are shipped directly to you through LillyDirect’s partner pharmacy.

*Zepbound® pens are prefilled, available in a wider range of doses (up to 15 mg), and may be covered by insurance or paid out-of-pocket through your regular pharmacy. What are the side effects of Zepbound?

Zepbound, like other GLP-1 medications, may cause side effects—especially when increasing the dose. These usually ease as your body adjusts. Common issues include nausea, constipation, fatigue, bloating, and mild stomach discomfort. Most people find symptoms improve once they reach a steady dose.

How Do I Store Zepbound?

Store both pens and vials in the fridge between 36–46°F. They can be kept at room temperature for up to 21 days if needed, but should never be frozen.

Pens shouldn’t be returned to the fridge after being out. Vials should be discarded immediately after a single use—even if some medication remains.

How Much Does Zepbound® Cost?

That depends on whether you’re prescribed pens or vials—and if you’re using insurance. Zepbound pens cost around $1,050 per month without coverage. If you have commercial insurance, you may qualify for a manufacturer savings card to lower your out-of-pocket costs.

Zepbound vials are cash-pay only. Pricing starts at $349 for the 2.5 mg dose and $499 for 5, 7.5, and 10 mg options. LillyDirect currently offers a discount for the higher doses, but to keep it, you’ll need to complete your refill check-in within 45 days of your last delivery.
